In view of the new infections currently reported in Germany, it must be clear that “if we overlap the curves, we are a little behind Spain and France and England,” said the head of Charité Virology at the German Press Agency (dpa ) In Berlin.
He stressed that “we should not pretend that things are unfolding very differently for us. Now we don’t do many things very differently. ” “There are some details that may be different here than in southern Europe. Our households are often smaller, we have more single-person households, ”Drosten said.
The number of new corona infections had recently passed the 10,000 mark in France. As authorities announced Thursday night, 10,593 new infections were counted in one day; the previous high on September 12 was slightly lower (10,561).
Infection numbers are skyrocketing again in much of the UK. In many places there is also a lack of evidence, so it is currently difficult to map the actual infection process. Each part of the country can decide on its own crown measurements.
Spain is the country most affected by the corona pandemic in Western Europe. The marks of 600,000 infections and 30,000 deaths had only been exceeded the previous day. However, the situation in Madrid is very worrying. The autonomous region around the capital with its 6.6 million residents accounted for nearly 40 percent of all new cases on Tuesday with 1,207 positive test results in 24 hours.
“Look exactly how things are going now”
There are fewer multigenerational families in which the virus is very easily transmitted beyond age limits, Drosten said. “Those are definitely differences. But otherwise Germany is not much different from these neighboring European countries. So we have to be very careful and watch closely how things are going now.
The frequency of testing is extremely high in Germany, but only since the decision to test returning travelers, Drosten said. “This is a testing frequency that we in Germany cannot endure for much longer.” The basic test activity that was previously carried out in Germany and will soon be carried out again is not much greater than in other neighboring European countries. The core of infection control is only slightly more pronounced in us than in other countries. “This is why we have to take the numbers seriously.”
As Drosten explained, the number of cases in Germany during the summer was largely due to returnees from vacation who would not necessarily have transmitted the virus to a large extent in this country. These infected people prefer to give clues about the situation of the crown in the country of origin. “What we are seeing at the moment is a reflection of what is happening in Germany in the form of virus cases.”
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin on Friday estimated the number of people infected with the coronavirus in Germany at 267,773, an increase from 1916 from the day before. Johns Hopkins University (JHU), based in the US city of Baltimore, reported 269,048 infected people. The RKI, which only takes into account the figures transmitted electronically from the federal states and updates its list once a day, recorded 9,378 deaths, seven more than the previous day. The JHU counted 9,376 dead. According to the RKI, the number of people recovered was around 238,700.
