Association of cities: keep waiting for the infection to occur

The association of cities and municipalities urges more patience in view of the current crown restrictions. At NDR Info, the association’s managing director Gerd Landsberg said the measures had not yet broken the wave of infections, but were showing the first effects. He believes that it is wrong to speak now of an extension of the restrictions. You first have to wait until next week and see how the infection process plays out in the next few days, Landsberg continued. Federal Economy Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) assumes that the restrictions will apply for several months. He told “Bild am Sonntag” that so far he has not seen any significant success from the restrictions that have been in place since the beginning of the month. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) wants to take stock of the measures tomorrow with the Prime Minister of the federal states.

Funeral ceremonies and funerals differently

In the Corona crisis, undertakers have to come up with new ideas to say goodbye to the deceased: Because not everyone can be there due to current contact restrictions, some funeral services are now being broadcast or recorded via video on the Internet, for example, according to the undertaker Markus Gebauer of Wolfsburg. “We rarely accept the offer,” he said. However, he knows colleagues who have been streaming funeral requests since the start of the corona pandemic. There is also the possibility of a digital pastoral by phone or chat. However, he is happy that people can return to the chapels in many places, says Gebauer.

The debate on classroom teaching continues in Schleswig-Holstein

Due to the growing corona contamination in schools, the GEW education union and the state parent advisory council for elementary schools are calling for consequences for schools in Schleswig-Holstein. “The Education Ministry is displacing rather than acting,” said GEW Managing Director Bernd Schauer of the German Press Agency. “But we can’t just ignore the growing health risk for everyone involved in the school.” The GEW calls for classes cut in half with high crown numbers. The president of the state parent advisory council for grammar schools, Claudia Pick, is in favor of more and better hybrid lessons, in which part of the class is taught directly on the site and other students are connected through the Internet .

The crown crisis is apparently a danger for addicts too

In the corona pandemic, the risk of relapse is apparently increasing for former alcoholics to drink again. “Many people who have been dry for several years have relapsed into isolation again, as reported by addiction self-help associations in particular,” said Linda Heitmann, director general of the Hamburg State Office for Addiction Problems, the German Press Agency . Above all, this is due to the great psychological stress caused by the pandemic. According to surveys, many people felt lonely. In addition, there is job insecurity and sometimes boredom, which leads people to consume more drugs and addictive substances.

Protective masks apparently free for risk groups

In the corona pandemic, the grand coalition wants to equip people in risk groups with protective masks free of charge. According to information from the German Press Agency, this stems from plans drawn up by the Federal Ministry of Health together with specialist politicians from the CDU and the SPD. According to this, insured persons should be entitled to free masks if they are at significantly higher risk of a serious disease course after a corona infection. The federal government must bear the costs of this. On Wednesday, the Bundestag and the Bundesrat will approve the amendment to the law.

Schleswig-Holstein reports 158 new corona infections

The number of confirmed corona infections in Schleswig-Holstein increased by 158 in one day: 43 cases are assigned to the Pinneberg district. The Kiel state government announced. The day before, he had confirmed 296 new infections in the country, exactly 233 a week ago. The number of deaths related to the Sars-CoV-2 virus increased from one to 219 since the pandemic began. 16,947 new confirmed cases for all of Germany

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), German health authorities reported 16,947 new corona infections in 24 hours. That is 5,514 cases less than the previous day (22,461). However, the number of registered cases is usually lower on Sundays and Mondays, also because fewer tests are carried out on weekends. Last Sunday, the number of new infections reported for the whole of Germany was 16,017. According to RKI’s management report, the so-called seven-day R was 1.05 (previous day: 0.99). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect about 100 more people. The value represents the appearance of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.

XFEL Schenefeld: The Crown Protein Riddle

At the XFEL research center in Schenefeld, an international team of scientists wants to solve a puzzle: What is the structure of the protein that the coronavirus carries in its shell? The researchers want to use the X-ray beam in the XFEL to decipher the structure of this E protein. If the scientists are successful, this could pave the way for the development of a corona drug. If they fail, the protein remains a mystery for now.
