At the FDP federal party convention, President Lindner called for a second blockade to be avoided in the fall. The state is responsible for reconciling the protection of health with the protection of liberty.

At the beginning of the FDP party congress in Berlin, party leader Christian Lindner called for a social effort to prevent another blockade as a result of the crown pandemic. The spring restrictions should not re-apply in the fall.

“New smart testing strategies”

“We need smart measures that combine the protection of health with the protection of freedom.” Here the “state community of responsibility” is asked. Lindner called for “new smart testing strategies,” an accelerated digitization of the healthcare system and a strengthening of vaccine research and development.

“We have to be smarter that the virus is dangerous,” said the leader of the FDP. “In the end, the virus must not triumph over freedom.” Lindner called for an open debate on the necessary corona measures: “Even in times of pandemic, there must be an opening to criticize government policy and propose alternatives.”

Bad survey results

Around 600 delegates gathered in a Berlin congress hotel for the liberal party convention. The meeting should send the “signal” that health protection is compatible with democratic, social and economic life, “Lindner said.

The most important personnel decision in the party congress is the election of a new general secretary, which is scheduled for the afternoon. At Lindner’s suggestion, the Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of the Economy, Volker Wissing, applies for the position. Secretary General Linda Teuteberg, who was elected last year, had made her position available under pressure from Lindner.

The party congress takes place under the impression of weak polls: there the liberals are currently between five and seven percent. In the 2017 federal elections, the FDP won 10.7 percent of the vote.
