Violent riots broke out in Leipzig at night for the third time in a row. In the Connewitz district, a demonstration against gentrification and displacement is said to have spiraled out of control after a few hundred meters. After throwing stones at the windows of the new buildings, the police opened the elevator, according to a reporter from the dpa news agency.
Then there were hunting scenes between masked people and investigators. Several people are said to have been arrested. Tram traffic stopped in the southern part of the city. According to the first police estimates, about 500 people had gathered for the demonstration registered under the slogan “Combining struggles – For some supportive neighbors”. Despite the ban, participants set fire to firecrackers and Bengalis.
The Saxon police wrote on Twitter that stones and fireworks had been thrown at officials. The meeting is officially over. “Please remain in peace!” The police appealed to the protesters.
There had already been outbreaks of violence in Leipzig on Thursday and Friday nights. This was preceded by the squat that had been canceled by the police. Police were attacked in unannounced demonstrations. Leipzig Police Chief Torsten Schultze said the attackers were “obviously left-wing extremists.” A total of nine officers were slightly injured.
Mayor Burkhard Jung also condemned the riots. “You cannot create a living space by attacking the police and setting fire to the barricades,” said the SPD politician.
For some time, a battle has been fought in Leipzig over the decrease in living space. The current triggers are houses like the one on Ludwigstrasse 71, which was occupied in August after 20 years of unemployment and was vacated by the police on September 2. The left-wing scene in Leipzig has been fighting gentrification for years. Again and again there are violent riots, attacks on the press and street battles. The latent conflict was already out of control at the beginning of the year.
