Leipzig: 45,000 right-wing extremists, conspiracy theorists, angry or worried citizens stood side by side as “side thinkers” and mostly unmasked in the center of Leipzig. The police were powerless and had to let parts of the mob surround the ring.

On the Saturday before Christmas, the so-called “lateral thinkers” wanted to return to the city. But the police are doing better this time.

Unlike in November, the city had banned marches recorded on short notice. The “lateral thinkers” wanted to come anyway. A so-called “Corona Spartakiade” (Spartakiade = major sporting event) should take place as an “escape”. At 12 noon, you need to bend your knees first at Augustusplatz and then go for a run around the ring.

But only the “referees” were there for the announced start of the competition: massive police presence that included water cannons between the Gewandhaus and the opera. The athletes from Corona did not come. Or maybe they didn’t.

Police blocked all federal and other major access roads to the city. In B2, for example, NRW officials stopped all vehicles and asked about the reason for the trip. The recognizable “side thinkers” or disruptors had to turn around.

While police spokesman Olaf Hoppe was giving interviews on Augustusplatz, he received a call from the federal police: “All is quiet at the main station,” he says dryly. In other words, there were no recognizable crown deniers on the trains.

So the police strategy seems to be working so far. To keep calm, the helicopter took off at noon. Hoppe to BILD: “We will continue to monitor traffic flows to Leipzig.” Shortly after saying this, a coach with around 30 suspected “lateral thinkers” was stopped in Dölzig, in the northwest of the city. Travelers now have to explain why they traveled despite the ban on sightseeing tours.

If you still manage to enter the city legally, you must remember to wear your mask. Police vehicles are on every corner. And officials have plenty of time to verify compliance with the Crown Protection Ordinance.
