Leipzig: OVG justifies the resolution of the demonstration for the demonstration against the measures of the crown

Three days after the “lateral thinking” demonstration in Leipzig, which led to attacks on policemen and journalists, the Higher Administrative Court of Saxony (OVG) laid out the reasons for its controversial decision that allowed the meeting in the city center. The city of Leipzig had previously wanted to move the demonstration to a large exhibition car park on the outskirts.

According to the reasoning, the judges assumed 16,000 participants based on a police risk forecast. Augustusplatz in Leipzig was big enough for such a crowd, even keeping Corona’s distance requirements of six square meters per person, he said. Along with some side streets, there was also a big enough damper.

The OVG announced Tuesday night in Bautzen that the space requested by the organizers from the beginning offered at least “a certain probability” that people would actually gather there and not spread out around the city in a disorderly way. After moving to the fair, the applicant announced that they did not want to demonstrate there.

In fact, more than 16,000 protesters gathered in the city center on Saturday. The police took over 20,000 participants. Most of them did not wear the required masks. The city broke up the meeting. After that, people were forced to cross the Leipziger ring.

After the chaos at the show, Saxony tightened the rules for meetings. The number of participants should be limited to 1000 in the future.
