In Leipzig, a spontaneous demonstration escalated Friday night in the alternative left-wing Connewitz district. According to police, masked people threw cobblestones and bricks at a police station and incoming emergency services, garbage cans were set on fire and burning barricades were placed on the tram rails. “There was a huge stone-throwing at our forces and vehicles,” a police spokeswoman reported. At first she could not say whether the officials were injured. There were no arrests at first. The police used tear gas.

The background to the unrecorded demonstration was home occupations. During the week, the police ended the occupation of an empty house in eastern Leipzig. On Friday afternoon, activists reported on another occupation in the Connewitz district via Twitter. The police were also on duty there in the afternoon. There was already a demonstration on Thursday from which police officers were attacked.

About 100 people had gathered for the spontaneous demonstration, almost all dressed in black and hooded. Firecrackers and rockets flew, then the elevator began to move rapidly toward a police station. Slogans were shouted against the police. The stones flew against the windows of the police station.

Later, the police increased the number of their emergency services. The officers were thrown at stones and bottles in various streets. Two police cars collided with each other, which was recognized by the stone throwers with scornful shouts. The violent outbreak of violence lasted approximately three-quarters of an hour. Then the situation calmed down. The police also used a helicopter.

Local residents helped clear barricades made of road signs and burning garbage cans from the streets. Some yelled at the rioters to get out of Connewitz. There are always riots in the district. There could be more confusion over the weekend. Another rally had been announced for Saturday night.
