In the dispute over the leadership and orientation of the AfD parliamentary group in the Lower Saxony state parliament, the former leader of the parliamentary group and two members of parliament declared their departure. With this, the AfD loses its status as a parliamentary group.

rehe AfD parliamentary group in the Lower Saxony state parliament dissolved in a dispute over leadership between the moderate and radical camps. According to a report from the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung” on Tuesday, the former leader of the parliamentary group Dana Guth from the moderate spectrum and MPs Stefan Wirtz and Jens Ahrends announced that they would leave the parliamentary group. This means that the AfD is losing its status as a parliamentary group, she said.

Guth told the newspaper: “The three of us decided today, after the incidents of the last ten days, to leave the parliamentary group.” But this doesn’t have to be the end of the AfD in the state parliament; all three are available for the establishment of a new parliamentary group. They also wanted all three party members to stay.

According to the report, the nine-member group had previously discussed the group’s future leadership and political direction for several hours. Guth was ousted ten days ago as head of the AfD in Lower Saxony, and Jens Kestner, a member of the Bundestag, who is part of the spectrum on the right, became president.

In the Lower Saxony AfD, there has been a power struggle between moderate and more radical forces in the party for a long time.

The AfD entered the Lower Saxony state parliament for the first time in 2017 with a result of 6.2 percent. The loss of strength of the parliamentary group means that the AfD will have fewer parliamentary rights in the Lower Saxony state parliament.
