Davy Klaassen could have played for Werder Bremen one last time on Saturday. Florian Kohfeldt wishes a very special player for his birthday on Monday.
After the victory against Arminia Bielefeld, Florian Kohfeldt had every reason to laugh. When his team fell 4-1 to Hertha BSC two weeks ago, the worst fears for the new season arose. But with the two wins against Schalke and Bielefeld, Bremen still got off to a good start to the new season. Before the next game against SC Freiburg (October 17, 3:30 pm), there is now a little time to catch your breath. At least after the transfer window closes at 6pm on Monday.
Until then, it will probably remain turbulent on the Weser. And Kohfeldt has to do a little balancing act. The Werder coach celebrates his 38th birthday on Monday. But over coffee and cake, his eyes often wander to the cell phone and check for any news from sports director Frank Baumann. These days he is negotiating with Ajax Amsterdam a change for Davy Klaassen. At the same time, Bremer wants to improve again in midfield. On the occasion of his crib festival, Kohfeldt expressed a cheeky wish. It is unlikely that sports director Frank Baumann can deliver on this.
I would like Xavi to play football again and come here.

Werder will have to use some shelves underneath
The world-class former Spanish player would have been a delight to behold on the ball at Weser Stadium. The now 40-year-old ended his career a year ago and is currently coaching Al-Sadd SC in Qatar. Kohfeldt’s wish will likely not be fulfilled, and Werder will have to use a few shelves lower down. The rumors revolve around an engagement from Kevin Stöger, who last played for Fortuna Düsseldorf and is currently looking for a new club.
It is still unclear whether Klaassen will actually leave Werder. Against Bielefeld he was back in the starting lineup and went unnoticed. When he was substituted in the 75th minute, Kohfeldt and Klaassen embraced. A farewell gesture? Kohfeldt doesn’t expect it. He would like to stay with his vice-captain. However, the coach also knows the tight portfolio of his club. “Of course I want him to stay,” Kohfeldt said Saturday night. But if the Dutchman is drawn to his homeland, “I will thank Davy for his 100 per cent commitment in every match.”
Baumann expects bargains
Whether Kohfeldt really has to express his gratitude wishes or can continue planning with Klaassen also depends on Baumann’s negotiating skills. He doesn’t really see himself as a “gamer.” At the end of a transfer phase, Baumann says, there can always be opportunities that weren’t possible a few weeks before. And then there is always one offer or another on the market. If Klaassen leaves, Kohfeldt would, of course, be happy with a top-class newcomer in midfield. But Xavi’s dream will continue to be what it is: a dream.
That is why Bielefeld is an unexpectedly difficult opponent for Werder
