The death of an 86-year-old man in a garden in Geraberg (Ilm district) has apparently been clarified. As the Erfurt prosecutor announced on Wednesday, a 58-year-old garden neighbor confessed to killing the woman on 19 November.

According to the prosecution, the man first tried to kiss the 86-year-old man on the mouth. When she resisted, he is said to have pressed a cloth to her nose and mouth, causing the woman to suffocate. The suspect is said to have at least approved of the woman’s death, according to investigators. After the fact, it is said that he stole her wallet.

Police had found numerous traces, including DNA, at the scene. The defendant had already voluntarily submitted a saliva sample during the weekend, like other neighbors. Before the 58-year-old could be arrested, he turned himself in to police on Tuesday. The Erfurt prosecution wants to request an arrest warrant for murder against the defendant with no criminal record on Wednesday. The man faces a prison sentence of between five and 15 years.
