Triple winner FC Bayern Munich won the Super Cup title against Borussia Dortmund in a roller coaster match. After a 2-0 lead, the record champion narrowed significantly and conceded the draw, but a late goal gives the Munich team their fifth title this year after the UEFA Super Cup.
Joshua Kimmich let out a primal cry, swinging his fists forward. With an art of clowning thrown in the fall, the national player gave Bayern the next cup in a wild classic against his eternal rival Borussia Dortmund and after the final whistle he cheered more strongly for the number five title.
“Joshua is a great player. How he gets into goal when he falls …” Not only did the once again outstanding Manuel Neuer marvel after the turbulent 3: 2 (2: 1) over Kimmich. Coach Hansi Flick also took the winner of the match in his arms and seemed to ask: How did you do that? Kimmich then showed his left hoe.
Kimmich’s goal in the 82nd minute spelled the decision of the Champions League winner, who can now even call himself a “fivefold” winner. Corentin Tolisso (18th) and Thomas Müller (32nd) gave the team of successful coach Flick a seemingly reassuring lead in the weekend’s Big Losers in the Bundesliga. But Dortmund came back via Julian Brandt (39th) and young star Erling Haaland (52nd) in the “farewell match” for referee Bibiana Steinhaus, who will end her career at just 41 years old. Kimmich (82nd) led Bayern to the eighth Super Cup.
Bayern counterattacked BVB
Both coaches started the rotary for the prestigious duel without fans. Flick switched to five spots after the 1: 4 bankruptcy at Hoffenheim and ordered top scorer Robert Lewandowski back to the starting lineup. Lucien Favre even brought in six new players after the sober 2-0 draw in Augsburg, including Marco Reus for the first time this season.
The tactical changes were also associated with the many changes. At Bayern, Javi Martínez acted as an additional interceptor in defensive midfield, but that only helped in a limited way. Müller drifted between the right wing and 10th, which Dortmund repeatedly offered gaps.

Instead, Bayern’s leadership was the product of a classic counterattack to Dortmund. After a BVB corner, the ball passed only four seasons into the other penalty area, where Tolisso executed a pass from Lewandowski on follow-up. Substitute goalkeeper Marwin Hitz, who represented the ailing Roman Bürki, could do nothing.
Haaland lost the lead
Reus tied after a bad pass from Manuel Neuer (24th). But Bayern’s renewed response was swift: after a strong cross from Davies, Müller climbed higher at the far post than the much smaller Felix Passlack and headed in. Coman dropped 3-0 after another counterattack (38th).
In the face of defeat, Dortmund became bolder, pushed higher and was rewarded. After a forced error in the preparation game by Benjamin Pavard, Reus quickly passed the ball to Haaland, who was taken out by Brandt.
After the break, Thomas Meunier (47th) should have tied. Haaland did this after Delaney’s pass, and the Norwegian even had 2: 3 on the foot (59th), but Neuer made an outstanding one-on-one save. “If you don’t score at the end,” Brandt said, struggling with exploiting opportunities in the second half and ranting, “We have two bothersome goals in the first half.”
As playing time increased, both teams staggered like two boxers hitting each other, in anticipation of a stroke of luck. Kimmich accomplished this in a spectacular way.
