SSouth Korea has responded cautiously to reports that North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un is in critical condition after an operation. It cannot be confirmed that there are signs of serious problems with Kim’s health, the Presidential Office in Seoul said Tuesday. There is also no evidence of “unusual activities in North Korea.”

Speculation about the state of health arose after Kim missed the celebration on April 15 in honor of her late grandfather, state founder Kim Il-sung. The day is considered the most important holiday in North Korea.

CNN quoted an unnamed US official as saying Kim was in “great danger” after an operation that was not described. South Korean Internet newspaper “Daily NK”, citing anonymous sources, reported that Kim was recovering from cardiac surgery in the capital Pyongyang and that his condition was improving.

Smoking, obesity, fatigue.

He is currently recovering from an intervention in a villa in North Phyongan province. “Excessive smoking, obesity and fatigue” were the immediate reasons for the operation, the newspaper quoted an unidentified North Korean source as saying. “Daily NK” is mainly operated by defectors from North Korea.

In 2016, the South Korean media, citing intelligence officials, reported on the alleged execution of former North Korean military chief Ri Yong-gil for corruption and other allegations. Months later, however, the North Korean media showed that Ri was alive and filled out several new posts.

Kim’s absence from state media often leads to speculation or rumors about his health. In 2014, he was in the public for almost six weeks, but then reappeared with a cane. Days later, South Korean intelligence reported that Kim had a cyst removed from her ankle.
