“Even if I can be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” the former California senator said in Wilmington, Delaware on Saturday. “Because every girl who looks tonight sees that this is a land of opportunity.”
In her speech, the 56-year-old wore a white suit, inspired by the suffrage movement in the United States when women demonstrated for their right to vote.
Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California, where he grew up in an African-American community. His father emigrated to the United States from Jamaica to study economics. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer researcher and civil rights activist, came to the United States from India when she was 19 years old. The couple divorced when Harris and his sister Maya were young, and the girls later lived with their mother. They were raised Christian, but also attended Hindu temples with their mother.
Over the course of her career, Harris was her first several times: After studying in Washington and California, she became San Francisco’s first black district attorney. In 2010, she became the first woman to hold the position of Attorney General in her home state. She entered the United States Senate in 2017 as the first black woman to represent California, and was the second African-American woman to sit in the House of Parliament. She is now also the first graduate of a historically African-American university, Howard University in Washington, to hold such a senior position.

On the day to commemorate civil rights activist Martin Luther King 2019, Harris announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. “The Americans want a fighter, they want someone to fight like crazy for them,” he said at the time. Her husband Emhoff will also make history. The lawyer and father of two, married to Harris for the second time, is the first second gentleman in American history.
