Jüchsen: fools celebrate illegal candlestick parade – police criticism

In Jüchsen, in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, around 90 people held an illegal light measurement parade. They walked through the town in costumes or in everyday clothes on Sunday afternoons, and vehicles and horses could also be seen. According to the district office, the action was dissolved by the police. Three criminal charges were brought against the participants for insulting and resisting the police officers.

It’s still open if there were arrests. Images posted on the Internet show, among other things, how police officers took a person to the ground and handcuffed him. Police were on the scene with numerous officers and emergency vehicles.

Criticisms of police tactics

People who apparently followed the event criticized police tactics on Monday. In two emails to MDR THÜRINGEN, it is said that the police were on site hours before the move and did not intervene during the move. Only at the end did the officers march in full force and take action against the small group that had not yet returned home.

The district mayor, Beate Heßler, describes the police operation as disproportionate. If the officers had allowed the participants, the matter would have ended in three minutes. The large police force overstated the matter. Hessler restricted that he could not assess whether the participants in the candlelight parade were wearing masks or had kept their distance.

District administrator warns potential copycats

The Schmalkalden-Meiningen district administrator, Peggy Greiser (pl), described the behavior of the participants as absolutely irresponsible and should not be tolerated. It was an organized and illegal event. No minimum distances were observed and no mask and nose were used.

We will not accept it. In hospitals, doctors and nurses fight for countless lives, at home many fear for their economic existence and here Carnival is celebrated. Apparently there is a total lack of a sense of reality and consideration.

Greiser warned possible copycats elsewhere during carnival season. The candlestick parade is part of the carnival tradition in Jüchsen. However, due to the corona pandemic, the Jüchsen Carnival Club canceled the move this year.

With 471 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days, the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district currently has the highest incidence rate for corona in all of Thuringia. According to figures from the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin, the district is currently at the top of all German districts and cities. However, the RKI indicates a lower incidence value.
