For many, this news was a relief. The first cheers could be heard immediately in Washington. Then the trumpet concerts began, and they would not stop for a long time.
After days of shaking, the slow count in the midst of the pandemic, after the numerous and continuous unfounded – and continuous – attempts by the president still in exercise to sow doubts about the legitimacy of the vote, the certainty had returned: the citizens Americans were against another four years. In many ways, Biden is a man from a bygone age. He looks back on a decade-long Senate career and eight years as vice president. He witnessed and helped shape the period when there was still inter-party cooperation in Congress.
His main objective, as his speeches shortly after the elections demonstrated, will be to reconcile the country with itself. It is important to revive the virtues of the pre-America First era and develop them further at the same time. Doing this not only symbolically, but also in the form of laws will be difficult given the rather disappointing results of the Democrats in the Congressional elections.
Biden wants to switch to presidential mode immediately and communicate it to the outside world. A few days ago, he and Harris received a report on the crown crisis, although the election outcome was still uncertain. He is expected to quickly announce the first candidate for his government. This is supposed to send the message: Everything is routine, this will be a completely normal transfer of power.
Trump is eliminated, but remains in office for two and a half months
But that is not certain. The long-cultivated election campaign ritual in which the loser calls out the winner and congratulates him will likely be as little under Trump as a speech admitting defeat.
While in Washington, DC, not far from the White House, people celebrated as if they were redeemed and politicians around the world congratulated Biden, the Trump field sent messages: “DEFEND GEORGIA”, it said in one; they demand a count stop in Michigan, in another.
The election was by no means decided, the incumbent president announced. Shortly before CNN, NBC, BBC, AP and Fox News announced Biden as the winner, Trump had launched a series of unfounded and paperless tweets about alleged election fraud. Then he went to play golf. A video of Trump posing for photos with a girlfriend on the ground circulates on social media.
Meanwhile, his lawyers have gone to court in several disputed states. But the company is not very promising, several judges in various states have already rejected the issue.
Trump is eliminated, but remains in office for about two and a half months. During this time you can still attempt sabotage. An attempt to undermine the will of the electorate through the “Electoral College” does not even seem out of the question. Trump needs allies for this, but they hesitate.
His post-election appearances, conspiracy theories, and reality-denying messages suggest that he will continue to fight dirty tricks for as long as he can.
