Vaccinations are carried out in Germany since the weekend. Health Minister Jens Spahn now wants to comment on the start of vaccination and the situation of the crown in Germany. You can follow the press conference live on the broadcast here.
11:00 am: “We are living in a time of contrasts,” says Spahn at the beginning of the press conference. On the one hand there is hope, on the other hand “great suffering”. Germany is still far from normal.
On the other hand, it was faster than ever to develop a vaccine. More than 60,000 people have already been vaccinated. “The vaccination started successfully,” says Spahn, while admitting that things go awry at one point or another. “The vaccination campaign was and is a national feat.”
Ask for understanding and solidarity. Initially, the vaccine is in short supply. Therefore, those who are particularly at risk and those who care for high-risk patients should get vaccinated first. Urge all caregivers to get vaccinated.
11:08 am .: Lothar Wieler, president of the Robert Koch Institute, once again urged all citizens to avoid travel and private gatherings as much as possible. The virus will spread for many more weeks, Wieler says. 5,600 corona patients are currently in intensive care treatment. “That’s sad again,” Wieler said. Wieler calls the start of vaccination a “great scientific success.” Still, it will be months before so many people are vaccinated that the virus cannot spread further. Therefore, the AHA measures will remain in effect for a long time.
11:15 am.: Klaus Cichutek, president of the Paul Ehrlich Institute, responsible for vaccines and biomedical medicines, confirms that the vaccine is safe. There are minor side effects, as is known from other vaccines. Cichutek said several more vaccines are already in phase three, including that from the Dutch manufacturer Curevac. After successfully completing the third phase, you can apply for admission.
11.25am: Spahn assumes that between 1.5 and 2 million doses of Moderna vaccine will arrive in Germany in the first quarter, if approved. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is scheduled to issue a recommendation on January 6. If this is positive, Spahn expects the vaccination to start quickly, but not yet on January 7.
11.34: Great Britain approved the vaccine from the manufacturer Astrazeneca in the morning. Cichutek reports that the EMA is in contact with the manufacturer, but has not yet received a full request for approval.
First breakdowns with vaccines
There were several mishaps when the vaccination began: In the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, eight employees of a nursing home were mistakenly injected five times the dose of the BioNTech vaccine, as the Vorpommern-Rügen district admitted on Monday. In seven districts of Upper Franconia, the first around 1,000 cans are not used at all after the transport box has not been properly cooled at times.
Over the weekend, the first 150,000 doses of vaccine were distributed to the 16 federal states. 1.3 million cans should be ready by Thursday. Spahn had already warned that it might “shake off at one point or another” at first.
On Tuesday night, Spahn told the ARD Tagesthemen about the problems with scheduling appointments for the corona vaccination, at first, unfortunately, the waiting times on the phone lines could not be avoided. Since each federal state has a different system, there is “a bit of federal confusion.”
Spahn had already spoken of a “good start” for vaccines and rejected special rights for vaccinated people. Many wait in solidarity so that some can get vaccinated first. And those who have not yet been vaccinated hope that those vaccinated will show solidarity, “Spahn told the newspapers of the Funke media group.
He also agreed to an extension of the Crown’s measures: By containing the pandemic, Germany is “far from where we have to go,” said the CDU politician. The federal and state governments would have to decide how far the measures could be extended at their planned conference next Tuesday.
