Next year, Tesla cars will roll off the production line at Grünheide. 12,000 posts are planned there at the moment, for which Elon Musk advertises on Twitter. Brandenburg’s Finance Minister Steinbach expects, however, that many more employees will be needed in the future.

With a tweet in German, Tesla boss Elon Musk announced employees for his planned factory in Grünheide, Brandenburg. “Please work at Tesla Giga Berlin! It will be a lot of fun!” The businessman tweeted overnight. Musk had only visited Germany last week, including the construction site in Brandenburg.

According to the state government, many more jobs could be created at the factory of the American electric car pioneer than previously stated. “In perspective, the Tesla factory in Grünheide could, depending on the market growth, have up to 40,000 employees,” said Brandenburg Minister for Economic Affairs Jörg Steinbach of the SPD of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. The automaker’s plans currently envisage that around 12,000 employees will produce up to 500,000 electric cars a year there. According to the state government, qualification profiles are available for the first 6,000 positions.

Employees from other countries too

“One thing is clear: we will not be able to meet Brandenburg’s need for skilled workers alone,” Steinbach said. Your federal state could also benefit from auto industry job cuts in other federal states. “Now there is a unique possibility that these people will not end up unemployed, but can continue to work in a growing market.”

In a conversation with Tesla boss Elon Musk last week, he once again recalled German codetermination and collective agreements. “That certainly wasn’t greeted with euphoria. But we expect Tesla to pay based on collective bargaining in the end.”

According to Steinbach, final environmental approval for the factory could come before the end of the year. “When the approval of the entire project comes, it is closely related to the development plan process. Both should be in mid-December,” he said. Until now, Tesla has been building with preliminary permits. Construction is progressing rapidly. However, environmentalists warn of the negative consequences, for example, for drinking water in the region. So far, around 400 objections have been received. Critics will be heard on September 23.
