Israel: Benjamin Netanyahu’s government partner wants to vote in favor of dissolution of parliament

Defense Minister Benny Gantz’s Blue-White Alliance, who participates in the unity government in Israel, wants to join an opposition motion to dissolve parliament. His party, which ruled in coalition with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud, “would vote tomorrow for the dissolution of parliament,” Gantz announced in a televised speech Tuesday night.

The move could result in Israel’s fourth general election in two years. However, Wednesday’s vote is only a first stage. It would take two more readings in the Knesset before parliament could be dissolved.

Recently there have been growing tensions within the ruling coalition. In Israel, before Netanyahu and Gantz agreed to a government alliance in April, three parliamentary elections had been held in one year. If the current ruling coalition consisting of Netanyahu’s Likud and Gantz’s blue-white alliance breaks down, the country faces another political crisis.
