For the first time, Apple introduced four new iPhone models in one night. Here you can find out what they can do, how much they cost and how they differ from each other.

The decision to buy an iPhone will be more complicated than usual this year. For the first time there are four new models with the iPhone 12 and its three variants. Not only do they differ in size, price and equipment, but they also go on the market at different dates. Here you can find out what you need to know about the new models.

iPhone 12: the new standard

As in the previous year, Apple relies on a standard model that is simply named with a number. The iPhone 12 is, so to speak, the model in which the other models excel. As with last year’s model, Apple uses a 6.1-inch screen. Unlike last year, when OLED technology was reserved for Pro models, it is now used in all four devices. Plus, they all support a fast refresh rate of up to 90 Hertz. All devices also have the fast A14 processor and are compatible with 5G networks. The new design is reminiscent of the popular iPhone 4s or the new iPad design: the metal frame again has a clear edge and the curves introduced from the iPhone 6 have disappeared. Thanks to the new “Ceramic Shield” glass, the iPhone should be more stable than ever.

Like the iPhone 11, the new model also has a dual camera with wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lenses. It should deliver 27 percent sharper, more detailed images and, thanks to enhanced Deep Fusion AI technology, shine especially in low light. For the first time, night mode is also used in selfie and wide-angle cameras. A test will show if this really works as well as promised.

The iPhone 12 will be available in black, white, red, and mint green last year. The blue hue that matches the Apple Watch Series 6 (here in our test) is new. The iPhone 12 will go on sale on October 23 and will cost € 876.30 in the basic version with 64 GB. 128GB and 256GB are available as additional storage variants.

iPhone 12 Mini: the little novelty

For the first time, Apple is not only introducing the Pro model in two sizes. Unlike the Pro Max, the iPhone 12 Mini sets itself apart in the other direction: At 5.4 inches, it’s the smallest iPhone to date with a screen that covers the entire front. Except for the smaller screen and the smaller battery for reasons of space, it does not differ from the iPhone 12; the same colors and memory options are also available. At a price of 778.85 euros, it is almost 100 euros cheaper than its older brother model. Unfortunately, it won’t be available immediately – the iPhone 12 Mini won’t hit the market until November 13.

iPhone 12 Pro: the new premium model

As in the previous year, Apple also offers two premium versions this time. The iPhone 12 Pro is no smaller this time, the iPhone 11 Pro had “only” a 5.7-inch screen diagonal, but this time it comes with the same 6.1-inch screen as the base model. But there are enough differences. For one thing, the iPhone 12 Pro is built with a sleek stainless steel frame, while the iPhone 12 is only clad in aluminum. It also visually stands out with its own colors in gold, anthracite and silver. Last year’s noble green has been replaced by a pretty shade of blue.

There are also technical differences. Although there is no differentiation between LCD and OLED, the Pro screen is clearly superior to the simple model: the XDR screen of the Pro models is sharper and offers an even larger color space.

The camera on premium iPhones has a few more tricks up its sleeve, too. So Apple is back to using an additional zoom lens on the Pro models. On the iPhone 12 Pro, it not only enlarges the subject 2 times, but even 4 times. There is also a LIDAR sensor. The laser was first used on the iPad Pro at the beginning of the year and allows the distance to the subject to be accurately recorded. Currently, this is particularly useful for augmented reality applications.

The iPhone 12 Pro will go on sale alongside the base model on October 23, but at a price of 1,120 euros it will cost almost 250 euros more. But there’s already 128GB of storage on the cheaper Pro model, with 256GB and 512GB available as additional options.

iPhone 12 Pro: the top model

If the iPhone 11 Pro Max was simply bigger than its identically equipped sister smartphone, there is a clear top model again this year. With a diagonal of 6.7 inches, the iPhone 12 Pro Max not only has the largest iPhone screen to date, the screen of its predecessor is 0.2 inches smaller, but it also offers a better camera than the iPhone 12 Pro. While the more powerful 5x zoom can be handled quickly, the 47 percent larger image sensor is a solid hallmark. This should allow for significantly better photos to be implemented – about 87 percent better photos in low light. Only a test can show whether the potential can also be used in practice. For ambitious smartphone photographers, there’s probably no getting around the larger model.

Like the iPhone 12 Mini, the iPhone 12 Pro Max will only be available in stores on November 13 in the same color and memory versions as the iPhone 12 Pro. The price of 1217.50 euros makes it almost 100 euros more expensive than the smaller model.
