iPhone 12: Apple introduces new iPhones and HomePod mini

[ad_1]

The new iPhone looks a bit like an old iPhone. Apple changed the design of the iPhone 12, now more reminiscent of the fourth generation. Inside, however, there are many novelties, especially 5G technology. All four iPhone variants unveiled Tuesday night German time dominate the theoretically super-fast cellular standard. Apple is the latest major smartphone manufacturer to bring 5G-capable devices to market.

Under ideal conditions, download speeds of up to 3.5 gigabits per second were achieved, Apple announced. US wireless operator Verizon promised to go up to 200 megabits per second. However, it is unlikely that such values can be achieved in daily life.

The Corning display glass is also new. Thanks to nanotechnology, it should be significantly stronger than before, Apple promised. New glass is four times more likely to survive falls unscathed.

The iPhone 12 screen is 6.1 inches and has a resolution of 2532 by 1170 pixels. That’s more than double that of the iPhone 11. The iPhone 12 mini measures 5.4 inches and has a resolution of 2340 by 1080 pixels.

The Pro models have a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screen diagonal and a resolution of 2532 by 1170 or 2778 by 1284 pixels, which is also significantly higher than previous models.

The cameras

Apple has not changed the resolution of the cameras: like their predecessors, the new models usually have 12 megapixels.

On the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini, the light intensity of the wide angle lens in particular has been improved. With f / 1.6 it lets in more light than the previous model with f / 1.8. That should at least show in the dark. By the way, the cameras of these two devices will mainly benefit from the additional performance of the A14 bionic processor, which could, for example, speed up the focus or improve the cropping of portraits in the background. On the contrary, nothing has changed in terms of zoom capabilities.

This is different with the Pro models. Their telephoto lenses now offer four times (iPhone 12 Pro) and five times (iPhone 12 Pro Max) optical zoom. They have also improved the sensitivity to light from the wide angle to f / 1.6. Because the image sensor is also 47 percent larger than before, it should be even more sensitive to light than the iPhone 12. It’s notable that the telephoto light sensitivity on the Pro Max has worsened from f2. 0 to f2.2 according to the datasheet.

Additionally, only the Pro versions feature the popular iPad Pro LiDAR scanner, which captures objects by lasers and is supposed to enhance augmented reality applications, among other things.

IPhones also come with built-in magnets. On the one hand, they must ensure that devices are always placed on properly equipped charging mats where they charge particularly quickly. On the other hand, there will be accessories that are magnetically attached to the back, such as a card holder. It’s all called MagSafe, just like the magnetic connector for the power cord used to be on MacBooks.

Apple no longer includes a charger; after all, two billion of them are already in use. Headphones are also not part of the standard accessories. The company supposedly wants to save resources.

A cheaper variant of the smart HomePod

IPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro can be pre-ordered starting Friday and should be available starting October 23. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max should be available for pre-order starting November 6, and will go on sale a week later.

Entry prices for the Pro models are 1,120 euros and 1,217.50 euros, respectively. If you want more than 128 gigabytes of storage, you have to pay more. For the Pro Max with 512 gigabtes, for example, 1,461.20 euros are owed.

The iPhone 12 will cost from 876.30 euros (with 64 gigabytes), the iPhone 12 Mini from 778.85 euros.

Additionally, Apple has introduced a cheaper version of its HomePod smart speaker. The HomePod Mini will cost 96.50 euros, as the iPhone company announced on Tuesday, which is about a third of what the first HomePod cost.

One of the new features is the feature called Intercom, which allows you to use Siri to talk to multiple HomePods in different rooms. That, in turn, would require you to buy not just one device, but several.

The HomePod Mini is round like a little ball and is therefore reminiscent of Amazon’s new Echo speaker.
