“Too many closed doors”: Greens demand better conditions for immigrants

Ahead of the federal government integration summit, the Greens are calling for “real changes in our immigration society.” People with a migratory background would continue to be “too many closed doors”.
DThe Greens are demanding more efforts to improve opportunities for immigrants. “People of color and people with immigration backgrounds remain closed too many doors,” parliamentary group leader Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen) of the AFP news agency in Berlin said on Monday in view of the integration summit on Tuesday. “We finally have to get familiar with the structures to bring about real change in our immigration society.”

The federal government did not focus on possibilities and opportunities. “The integration summit hasn’t changed anything about that in the last 15 years.”
Göring-Eckardt criticized that the laws of recent years had prevented integration and participation rather than made it possible. “For these doors to finally open, all people must have equal access to all areas of life and work.” However, this cannot be achieved “with project financing always limited in time”.
The last integration summit of the current legislative period will take place on Tuesday. Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and State Minister for Integration Annette Widmann-Mauz (both CDUs) advise on a digital conference with around 120 representatives of federal, state, local authorities, migrant organizations and companies. The focus of the deliberations is the completion of the multi-year work of the National Action Plan for the Integration of the Federal Government.
