Burgers now have to go for a walk with a mask

New mask rules apply to hamburgers with immediate effect. Fearing a growing number of infections, the city is expanding the requirement for existing masks to popular parks and “tight” public spaces. The setting only applies on weekends.

Due to concerns about further escalation in the corona pandemic, it is now mandatory to wear a mask on weekends in particularly popular parks and green areas in Hamburg. The regulation for wearing a mask also applies to all places in public spaces where it is “tight” and distances are not guaranteed. Hamburg’s first mayor, Peter Tschentscher, announced this on Friday. The change is effective immediately.

According to Tschentscher, the green areas along the Alster, the Hamburg city park and the banks of the Elbe are affected by the mask requirement. These are popular destinations for walks and excursions. However, the obligation only applies on weekends during the day between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Police will monitor compliance with these rules, Tschentscher said. In Hamburg there is already a mask requirement in certain central areas of the city.

Tschentscher justified the hardening, in particular, with the increasing spread of new mutations of highly infectious viruses. Based on the Hamburg experts’ findings, these may already have spread much more in the city than the national average, he said. Therefore, it is “extremely important” to take precautionary measures. The desired opening steps are only possible if the infection situation also allows it.

Other cities also want to direct the expected flood of hikers to crown-compatible canals over the weekend with stringent requirements. In Düsseldorf, for example, there is a ban on staying in the old town and on the neighboring banks of the Rhine. Visitors cannot stay there for the weekend or sit in a meadow. The state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia is reacting to numerous violations of the mask requirements and distance rules last weekend.
