German health authorities reported 6,114 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in 24 hours. In addition, there were 218 more deaths in 24 hours, according to RKI figures from Sunday. On Sunday, the number of cases reported by the RKI is usually lower, not least because fewer tests are performed on weekends.
2,502 new infections less than last Sunday
On Sunday of last week, the RKI recorded 8,616 new infections and 231 new deaths in one day. On January 14, the peak of 1,244 deaths recently reported was reached. Among new infections recorded in 24 hours, the highest value was reached on December 18, at 33,777, but it contained 3,500 late reports.
The 7-day incidence is reduced by 140.2 in 4 weeks
The number of new infections reported in seven days per 100,000 residents (seven-day incidence) was 57.4 nationwide on Sunday morning, according to the RKI. Four weeks ago, on January 17, the incidence had been 136. Its previous peak was reached on December 22 at 197.6. Most federal states continue to see drops in seven-day incidents, according to the RKI.
The RKI has counted 2,334,561 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher as many infections go undetected.
Two countries already have incidence below 50
Overall, the number of new corona infections in Germany continued to fall over the weekend, as did the number of deaths. In two federal states, Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg, the incidence was less than 50. However, there are still drastic differences between the different districts. All other federal states had values below 100, Thuringia had the highest incidence with 97.6.
Nationwide: highest and lowest incidence in Bavaria
The differences between districts are also very clear: the Bavarian districts of Tirschenreuth with just under 310 and Wunsiedel in Fichtelgebirge with 230 had by far the highest incidence in Germany. The third highest incidence of seven days was reported from Wesermarsch in Lower Saxony: 221. The lowest in Germany Schweinfurt recorded a value of just under 6. Münster with 11 and Zweibrücken with 12 also have low incidences.
RKI: 2,119,100 Genesene
The RKI stated that the number of people recovered was around 2,119,100. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 64,960. The seven-day national R-value was 0.90 according to RKI’s situation report on Saturday night. This means that 100 infected people infect 90 more people.
