Important crown threshold
The president of the doctors questions the incidence of the 50s
Until now, the incidence of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week has been a benchmark for the severe restrictions in the corona pandemic. Medical President Reinhardt cautions against neglecting important factors. Rather, ask for a long-term strategy.
Medical President Klaus Reinhardt has asked the federal and state governments to reconsider the target of 50 new infections per 100,000 residents per week when deciding whether to extend the strict lockdown. “If we are strictly based on the incidence of 50 it must be carefully weighed against other important factors, such as the psychosocial consequences of school closures,” Reinhardt told the Germany publishing network.
The president of the German Medical Association also called for a long-term strategy to be finally implemented to protect particularly vulnerable population groups. In addition to vaccines, uniform measures are needed at the national level to minimize contact, especially for the elderly and previously ill. “Why is it so difficult to create fixed time slots for older people to shop in retail stores or special spaces for appointments in public institutions throughout Germany?” Reinhardt said.
The medical president also called for sufficient testing facilities and protective material not only for nursing homes, but also for family caregivers. “All this costs money and the implementation is not trivial, but with these means in certain circumstances human lives can be saved and blockages avoided,” Reinhardt said of his proposals for a long-term strategy. “I would like to see more creativity in the federal states and local authorities,” warned the medical president.
The incidence of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days has so far been considered the decisive threshold for the severe restrictions on public life in the corona pandemic. The Robert Koch Institute put the nationwide incidence on Tuesday at 149. Due to the high number of new infections, many state heads of government are now assuming that the lockdown, which has been in effect through January 10, will be extended.
