Virologist Hendrik Streeck has cautioned against placing too much hope in a coronavirus vaccine. In his opinion, it is very difficult to predict when a vaccine will be available. “Especially in the last phase there are surprises that are often not expected,” said the director of the Institute of Virology at Bonn University Hospital at RTL. Even if there is a vaccine, it does not always work to eradicate a virus, “to make it disappear from the world.” That was only successful once, with smallpox. But science has been working on this for decades too.
The race for a vaccine is in full swing around the world. Some funds are already in crucial testing phase III with tens of thousands of test people. This checks to see if the vaccine is not only tolerated, but actually protects against corona infection. This has not yet been proven for any remedy.
Therefore, Streeck looks forward to the upcoming fall season. “We will destroy 50 to 100 residents from new infections in many cities, during the fall and winter,” he said. Streeck cautioned against raising any fear in society. “There is a lot of warning about it, but if you notice it constantly, these warnings are no longer noticeable,” said the virologist. It is much more important to think of solutions.
Chancellor Angela Merkel had already warned against a sharp increase in the number of cases, especially in the fall and winter months. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder even considers 20,000 cases a day “realistic”. The number of new infections each day is currently in the low four-digit range. “You saw how fast it can develop,” said Söder ntv. The infection process should no longer be “downplayed”.
