Here’s what Mayor Kummer says about the protests in Hildburghausen
At the nation’s worst Corona hotspot in Hildburghausen, a few hundred people chant against the street blockade. In an interview with WELT, Mayor Tilo Kummer explains how this happened.
When the federal and state governments advise on the Corona crisis, hundreds of people walk the streets of the Hildburghausen hotspot and sing “Oh, how beautiful!” The next day there is calm again and confusion.
AThe day after the sensational Corona protest across the country, calm has returned to the southern Thuringia district town of Hildburghausen. The small pedestrian area with its open shops seems deserted.
On Thursday mornings, there are only a few shoppers wearing masks at the weekly market. The “walk” last night by several hundred people against the harsh lockdown in the district shook their heads among themselves: “This is crazy what they are doing,” comments a younger passerby who does not want to give his name.
“Die da”: Some 400 people who moved through the small town on Wednesday night despite strict exit restrictions. As the number of infections skyrockets in the region, protesters march through the streets chanting “Oh, how cute it is!” According to police, sometimes without a mask and at a minimum distance. At the same time, the country’s leaders are discussing new steps to contain the pandemic in Germany with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) in a video link.
State and local politicians are in awe of the images from Hildburghausen. “What has to happen before some people understand the seriousness of the situation?” Asks Hildburghausen Mayor Tilo Kummer (left) on Facebook. Kindergartens, schools, ambulance stations and entire fire departments had to be quarantined in the last two weeks.
Thuringian Health Minister Heike Werner (left) also speaks clearly: “How little supportive can you really be? In intensive care units, people fight for their lives. ” In such a situation at Germany’s worst hotspot, ignoring any protection measure would border on a criminal degree of selfishness.
Incidence three times the new threshold
Nowhere in Germany, measured in terms of population, is the infection rate higher than in the rural region on the border with Bavaria. No clear sources of infection have been identified here for a long time. According to the Robert Koch Institute, on Thursday there was a new record in the Hildburghausen district of 602.9 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week.
For comparison: heads of government at the federal and state levels see a situation of extreme infection in seven days from a threshold of 200 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, in which stricter rules should be applied. To break the wave of infections, drastic restrictions have been put in place since mid-week for the around 63,000 residents in the Hildburghausen district: they are no longer allowed to leave their homes until December 13 without good reason, schools and kindergartens have been closed.
Not everyone understands hard cuts. According to the chief of the city council, Kummer, calls for protests have been circulating online for days. “They are all connected to each other, that’s the same pattern as in Leipzig and Berlin, only smaller,” says district manager Thomas Müller (CDU) of the protest, which police broke up on Wednesday night after nearly two hours with the use of pepper spray. According to a spokeswoman, the police have not yet been able to identify an initiator.
The crown’s protest also sparked lively discussions on the Internet. Many criticized him as irresponsible and expressed their misunderstanding that the participants had endangered themselves and others. The satirical program “Extra3” tweeted on this: “The Robert Koch Institute reports a new low: in #Hildburghausen Last night the lowest empathy score in the whole of Germany was measured. “
“Extend the crown measures until the beginning of January”
The Hildburghausen district in Thuringia is currently the largest crown access point in Germany. According to the Prime Minister of Thuringia, Bodo Ramelow, the entire state has not been able to get out of the dynamic process of infection.
