Hessen: Dannenröder Fortst – activists cut the highway bridge

Environmental activists have cordoned off several highway bridges in the Rhine-Main area in protest against the construction of Autobahn 49 in Hesse, causing disruptions.

On Monday morning an action took place on Autobahn 3 between Wiesbadener Kreuz and Niedernhausen. The highway was temporarily closed in both directions, a police spokeswoman said.

“By hanging up, we create an artificial bottleneck and attention,” said one of the activists on A3. According to a police spokesperson, there were other abseiling actions on Autobahn 661 and Autobahn 5.

The motorway should connect Kassel and Giessen more directly

The blockade is related to the protest against the clearing in Herrenwald and Dannenröder Forest. Trees are already being felled in Herrenwald for the construction of Autobahn 49, which will one day connect Kassel and Gießen more directly, and logging is yet to come in the Dannenröder forest.

In both forests, environmental and climate protectors had hidden in tree houses and on platforms to stop logging work. He thinks the project is a failure, as it gets in the way of changing traffic.

Proponents, on the other hand, hope that closing the A49 gap will result in less traffic and noise, as well as a lower risk of accidents in the region’s villages, shorter distances for travelers and better connections to the network of roads.

27 hectares of forest will be cut down

The protests have been going on for more than a year. According to the Vogelsberg district, the actual construction of the highway should start on September 1, 2021. In preparation, around 27 hectares of forest will be cut down by February 2021.

In mid-October, a similar blockage on the A3 in the backwater near Idstein resulted in an accident in which one person was seriously injured. A car had collided with a truck at the end of the traffic jam.
