The regional bishop of Bavaria, Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, does not want to run for another term as council chairman of the Evangelical Church in Germany, as he said in an interview with Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR). “It’s good when someone new comes along, sets new accents, gives new impulses,” he said.

He remains the regional bishop in Bavaria until 2023, until then he wants to use all his strength for the regional church. There is a certain time when an office is assigned. “And then it’s good when it’s time to release it, to give it to other hands.”

The often fierce criticism and hatred he received due to his strong commitment to rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean was not a reason for his withdrawal, Bedford-Strohm said. You know very well that this public office is also exposed to criticism. “And these days that also means it’s violent sometimes or sometimes below the belt. You have to know what you’re getting into.”

Bedford-Strohm has been the face of the Protestant Church in Germany since 2014. At that time he was elected President of the EKD Council, three years before he was elected bishop of the state of Bavaria.
