Heiko Maas threatens Thailand’s king Maha Vajiralongkorn for staying in Bavaria

He owns a villa in Tutzing on Lake Starnberg, during the Corona closure he temporarily stayed at a luxury hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: No doubt, Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn likes to spend time in Bavaria. The only question is: too long? Or rather: what exactly is the 68-year-old man doing in Germany?

The matter would be diplomatically and legally problematic if the king of the foreigner, of Bavaria, took care of his official business. In any case, the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heiko Maas, has issued a clear warning to Maha Vajiralongkorn and threatened him with consequences if illegal behavior is discovered during his stay in Germany.

“Of course, I also have my eye on the events of the Thai king in Germany,” the SPD politician told a news conference in Berlin. This “hustle and bustle” is proven “permanently”. “And if there are things there that we perceive as illegal, there will be immediate consequences.”

“Not from German soil”

Maas had already made it clear in the Bundestag in early October that he would not tolerate the king ruling his country from Germany. “We have made it clear that the policy affecting the country of Thailand should not be based on German soil,” he said at the time. “If there are guests in our country who conduct their state business from our country, we would always want to counteract that clearly.”

In Thailand there have been protests against government policy for months, which have now also questioned the role of the monarchy. On Monday, the protesters wanted to march to the German embassy in Bangkok to deliver a letter. They are reportedly asking the federal government to verify whether the king conducts his official business from Germany.
