A stolen car sunk in the Main was reported to the BMW security center Wednesday night via the emergency call system, and could be found thanks to the transmission of location data.
The BMW X1, built in 2019, was likely stolen in Hasselroth, Hesse, Offenbach police announced Thursday. When the manufacturer received the emergency call, the vehicle owner reportedly had not yet lost his car. “He only found out when we called,” a police spokesman said.
That night, firefighters and water police searched the localized area of the river with boats and divers, and discovered the BMW.
It was also checked whether a person was still inside, said a spokesman for the water police in Frankfurt am Main. “From now on, we will bring an empty car,” they say. The car will be recovered with a special boat.
