It took a long time, now it’s clear: 58 unaccompanied minor refugees from the camps filled with Greece are expected to arrive in Hanover on Saturday. Under its promise, Germany is also ready to accept more minors, a spokesman for the Federal Interior Ministry in Berlin said on Wednesday. For other children, the origin has yet to be clarified. It is also important if they can have relatives in another EU country.
350 to 500 children will come to Germany
Germany wants to bring a total of 350 to 500 unaccompanied minors from the camps on the Greek islands, especially children under 14, sick boys and girls. Around 1,500 unaccompanied minors will be accommodated across the EU: in addition to Germany, France, Luxembourg, Portugal, Ireland and Finland they have also agreed to accept minors. So far, due to the Corona crisis, only twelve minors have been transferred to Luxembourg.

Crown quarantine in Lower Saxony
Young refugees arriving on Saturday are required to remain in Corona quarantine for 14 days in Lower Saxony. Then they are distributed to various federal states. Offers from municipalities ready to accept will also be taken into account, according to the federal interior ministry. The federal cabinet decided last week, after months of tug-of-war, that minors should come to Germany from the Greichische islands. Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) had long been committed to hosting refugee children.
Terre des Hommes: “Pure alibi event”
The organization to help children terre des hommes described the federal government’s decision as insufficient. It is a pure alibi, a spokeswoman said in Osnabrück on Wednesday. By contrast, Terres des hommes requires Germany to admit 5,000 children from Greek refugee camps.
Hygienic conditions in warehouses are catastrophic.
The situation in the fully overcrowded refugee camps on the Greek islands of the Aegean is dramatic. A Covid 19 disease outbreak could have devastating consequences there in light of catastrophic hygienic conditions.
