After a series of arson attacks in the south of Hannover, the investigation continues. The alleged perpetrator was arrested on Sunday.
The 60-year-old suspect was arrested on Saturday after a fire in an uninhabited house in the Döhren district. According to the police, he was captured near the scene of the fire. “We are verifying if he is responsible for the subsequent events or if it was an individual case in which he was caught red-handed,” a police spokesman said Sunday. It was the 19th fire since August that followed a similar pattern: Cars in underground garages, gazebos or objects in apartment buildings caught fire mostly in the late afternoon or early evening in a narrowly demarcated area in Hannover.
Similarity to a suspect in a ghost image?
Since mid-November, the police have been searching for an unknown man who could be responsible for the fires with a ghost. NDR.de police did not confirm media reports that the suspect who has now been caught looks like the man in the ghost image. And even if it did, that alone was not proof, a spokesperson said. The image is based on the description of a witness who had observed a suspicious person in a case.
Furniture and trash were on fire
The fire on Saturday was detected by police officers during a prevention mission because smoke was rising from the building. Police are currently assuming arson. According to the fire department, furniture and junk burned in one part of the building. Since the house was empty, no one was injured. The amount of damage is not yet clear.
