In front of the Hamburg synagogue there was an apparently anti-Semitic attack on Sunday afternoon. According to information from Süddeutscher Zeitung, NDR and WDR, a man dressed in military clothing attacked a Jewish student who was recognized as Jewish by a kippah and who had left the synagogue at Hohe Weide in the Eimsbüttel district. The 29-year-old perpetrator is said to have hit the student on the head with a folding shovel and injured him before the police officers present could overwhelm him and arrest him and take the many visitors to the synagogue to safety.

Both the military clothing and the date of the attack remind us of the attack on the Halle an der Saale synagogue almost a year ago. There, on the most important Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, a heavily armed right-wing radical tried to break into the synagogue and murder those who were praying. This Sunday was Sukkot, the multi-day Feast of Tabernacles that follows Yom Kippur on the Jewish calendar. On the Jewish calendar, the year is slightly shorter. That is why Yom Kippur was already celebrated last Monday.

The victim was taken to hospital with a serious head injury. Little is known about the assailant. According to information from German press agency the perpetrator is said to have had a paper with a swastika in his pocket.
