A 29-year-old student was attacked in front of a Hamburg synagogue on Sunday afternoon. The Hamburg police confirmed this to SPIEGEL. “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, NDR and WDR had previously reported on the attack. According to this, the victim should be a Jewish student.

According to police, a man dressed in military clothing hit the student on the head with a blunt object. “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, NDR and WDR report on a shovel. The student was hospitalized with head injuries. According to the police, his life is not in danger.

The perpetrator, also 29 years old, was provisionally detained. Officials who were on site to protect the synagogue and observed the incident overwhelmed the attacker.

According to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, it was apparently an anti-Semitic attack. Therefore, both the military clothing and the date of the attack would arouse memories of the attack on the Halle an der Saale synagogue a little less than a year ago. There, a heavily armed right-wing radical tried to break into the synagogue and murder those who were praying.

The State Criminal Police Office has started the investigation, the police say they have not yet learned of the motive of the offender. State security had also been turned on.
