After more than 30 years, Britain is withdrawing from the European Erasmus program for students as part of the post-Brexit deal. It was a “difficult decision,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday after agreeing on a trade deal between London and Brussels. The program was “extremely expensive” for his country, Johnson justified the measure.
The prime minister also announced a replacement program. He wanted British students to be able to study in the “best universities” in the world and not just in Europe. For the nearly 150,000 students from EU countries currently enrolled in UK universities, studying abroad at UK universities is likely to be more expensive and difficult.
EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier lamented the UK’s withdrawal from the Erasmus program. He called on the London government to quickly create “clarity” on its alternative program. Great Britain has been part of Erasmus since 1987.
