Grant: Corona bonus of 600 euros for employees: criticism of the Bundestag

SedanThe Bundestag Council of Elders has decided to award a tax-free crown bonus of up to € 600 to members of parliament. The money to be paid in December will serve to “alleviate the additional burdens caused by the crisis in the Crown,” Augsburger Allgemeine quoted from a letter from Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU). Consequently, around 4,500 employees out of 709 parliamentarians are affected.

A spokesman for the Bundestag pointed out that it was a question of transferring the collective agreement with the same effect for employees of the federal civil service. This was – as with other collective bargaining regulations – necessary because the employees do not formally belong to the public service, but have fixed-term employment contracts with individual deputies.

The alienated employees themselves

According to Augsburger Allgemeine, reference is also made to the collective agreement in the Schäuble letter. Depending on the collective bargaining grouping, members of parliament should receive between 300 and 600 euros, trainees 200 euros. According to the Bundestag, the tax exemption derives from the income tax law and is therefore not at the discretion of parliament.

According to the newspaper, several members of parliament were “surprised, but a bit more strange than pleased,” as one interested person reported, citing several of their colleagues. It is by no means the case that parliamentary offices were inactive during times of partially restricted parliamentary operations. But there have been no noticeable additional loads compared to previous years.

“We don’t ask for that”

Compared to, for example, nurses or geriatric nurses, it was often possible to work comfortably in the home office. “We are not asking for that,” said the newspaper’s parliamentary representative. “In our office we are now considering donating the money to a charitable cause,” he said. The Bundestag noted that the special payments would be made on the proposal of the Committee on Employee Affairs of the Members of Parliament with the participation of the intergroup’s employee advisory council.
