For the first time, a district in Lower Saxony has imposed a night curfew. About 140,000 residents are affected in Bentheim County.
The curfew applies from Wednesday night. So residents are no longer allowed to leave houses and apartments between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., as the district announced Monday. According to the Hannover Ministry of Health, it is the first time in the country that a municipality in Lower Saxony has responded with a measure of this type to contain the corona pandemic. The new rule in Bentheim County will initially apply until January 12.

Walking allowed
There is only one exception for Christmas Eve. On that day, the curfew does not begin until 10 pm Roads that are unavoidable for professional or medical reasons are also excluded from the ban. People taking their dogs for walks are also possible, he said.
The district administrator sees no other way
In Bentheim County, there was a value of 210.7 new infections per 100,000 residents in a week on Monday. There is no way around stricter measures with an incidence value of more than 200, said district administrator Uwe Fietzek (independent). Such a measure had already been implemented in numerous circles in other federal states such as North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria, he emphasized.
Gifhorn: high incidence, no curfew
In Lower Saxony, however, Bentheim has so far been an exception, although other districts also have high incidence values. Meanwhile, the Gifhorn district, for example, has had the highest value nationally, although it has now fallen slightly and is currently 190.9. However, they want to give up curfews there for now. The district administrator Andreas Ebel (CDU), instead, calls on citizens to gather in the tightest circle at Christmas.
Vaccinations begin December 27
With numbers like this, all eyes are on the start of vaccination centers. According to the state government, the 50 vaccination centers in Lower Saxony are already operational. Vaccination should start on December 27, in the Osnabrück and Cloppenburg districts, because the incidence values here were very high for weeks or many elderly and nursing homes were affected by corona outbreaks.
