Federal Minister for the Family, Franziska Giffey, wanted to speak about working conditions in care in the early afternoon. However, at the end of the press conference the question of the controversial doctoral thesis was raised.

“My university has informed me that I will be given the opportunity to comment. I will take this opportunity,” Giffey replied. However, the minister still does not want to reveal what the content of this statement could be: “Out of respect for my university, I ask you to respect the fact that I present my position to my university first and then to the press.”

“Dissertation written to the best of my knowledge and belief”

Less than two hours later, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs releases a statement from the minister: Giffey will no longer use his title with immediate effect and will no longer use it in the future. She cannot formally return the title herself.

SPD policy justified his move by saying that he wanted to avoid further harm to his family, his political work, and the party. You wrote the thesis to the best of your knowledge and belief. The statement made only in writing also states:

“I am not prepared to make my dissertation and the recently initiated proceedings associated with it the subject of political disputes.”

Giffey still pending the leadership of the Berlin party

Giffey is responding to accusations of plagiarism and new research from the Free University of Berlin (FU). It should be an attempt at liberation; after all, she wants to climb to the top of the Berlin SPD. She continues to adhere to this, just as she wants to remain in office as minister, as she announced.

Although the AfD educational policy spokesperson has already asked for his resignation and describes the resignation of the title as a “tactical maneuver.” In Giffey’s written statement, he continues:

“Who I am and what I can do does not depend on this title. (…) I would like you to measure me by my commitment to citizens, especially now, in the worst crisis that has hit our country in decades (…) That requires all my commitment and all my strength. “

The university initially only issued reprimands

In February of last year, the Minister of the Family herself asked the UF for a formal examination procedure. The university decided in fall 2019 not to revoke Giffey’s doctorate and instead issue a reprimand. Despite the deficiencies found, it could not be fundamentally questioned that it was an independent academic achievement, so the reasoning, which Giffey heard with audible relief at the time: “That means: With this clarity I can continue my work as Minister Federal Family, and I will continue to do this with great pleasure and commitment, as in the last periods of my mandate. “

However, a week ago, after a debate, the FU announced that it would withdraw the complaint and reopen the process.
