Geiger flies away from his emotional chaos

After his first win at the Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf, ski jumping star Karl Geiger is overwhelmed. The flying ski world champion shows his entire class in difficult conditions. But the emotional chaos of the last few weeks can be clearly seen in him.

Karl Geiger, until recently you were still in crown quarantine, now you are winning the start of the tour in your hometown of Oberstdorf. How did you do that?

Karl Geiger: The day before yesterday I came out of quarantine. I don’t know how to do that either. I tried to prepare well and then hold on to the competition, have fun and attack to the max.

They led after the first race, they had to go down as the last starter, the others endured a lot. What was going through your head?
It wasn’t that easy. I thought, ugh, it’s snowing a lot. In such conditions, I have already bitten the grass once, it was at the 2019 World Cup in Seefeld. But rushing is the wrong solution. I made sure to stay with myself and show a clean jump.

You became world ski champion in December, your first father, then the crown infection, and now the victory in Oberstdorf. That’s a lot of excitement for a month …
I am really overwhelmed. Words cannot express what has happened in recent weeks. It was an ups and downs, being successful at Oberstdorf is something really special to me, that means a lot to me.

It was a competition with no spectators, normally 25,000 fans in your Oberstdorf would have freaked out if you won. How big is the sadness there?
That makes me a little sad, but it’s a difficult time. I hope we will have it again in a different way next year. It is still something special and I am very happy.
