Starting Monday, nurseries in Baden-Württemberg will gradually open their doors again. The Ministry of Culture has presented a draft for this. The criticism comes from the union and the mayor of Tübingen Palmer (Greens).

Many parents have been waiting for this for a long time: the nurseries and kindergartens in Baden-Württemberg will reopen from May 18, at least partially. According to the Ministry of Culture, the goal is for nurseries to gradually expand care to a restricted regular operation. The exact timing of this gradual resumption depends on the institution.

Proposal to amend the Corona regulation

According to its own statements, the Ministry of Culture developed a proposal to amend the Corona Regulation, which the state government has not yet approved. The updated regulation is then the legal basis for implementation.

The expansion of the daycare business is necessary not only in view of the plight of many parents and families, but also for children, the ministry continues. The closure of the nurseries clearly showed how important it is for children to have contact with their peers.

Normal operation is not possible

According to the Ministry of Culture, in the context of the applicable hygiene and authorization regulations, as well as the staff of day-care centers restricted by risk groups, there will be conditions that are far from normal before the Corona crisis. Protection against infection is always a priority. With the help of proposals from the Ministry of Culture, the state government’s steering group wants to decide exactly what the restrictions on the nursery will be from Monday night on Monday.

Criticism of union opening

According to the union, day care centers are not ready to expand the range of day care services starting this Monday. The president of the Union of Education and Science (GEW), Doro Moritz, told the Minister of Culture Susanne Eisenmann (CDU) on Wednesday that she has no concept for the announced care of up to 50 percent of children. Therefore, it is irresponsible to open more nurseries on Monday.

The SPD has similar tones in the Stuttgart state parliament. The accusation: the culture minister abandoned the municipalities. This is irresponsible, said SPD leader Andreas Stoch.

Palmer does not consider the concept feasible in practice

Tübingen Mayor Boris Palmer (Greens) also criticized the planned opening. He considers that the Ministry’s calendar is neither reliable nor practical. This raised hopes among parents that they should now disappoint municipalities as child care providers, he said Wednesday.

According to Palmer, there are no staff at his city facilities to create new groups. According to the company’s medical advice, patients with potential risk among teachers should not do any contact work with children. Palmer also considers it counterproductive for an educator to care for different groups: “We would create new chains of infection if we were to alternately employ staff across multiple groups.”
