In Papenburg, one of the city’s landmarks caught fire. As the police announced in the morning, the museum ship “Friederike von Papenburg” caught fire.

The ship is in full fire, a spokeswoman said. The fire was discovered around 7:30 am It is currently unclear how it got to the fire. The fire brigade is on duty with a large contingent on the canal in front of Papenburg town hall to extinguish the flames. Rescue workers from Oberende, Unterende and Aschendorf are on site.

Police: No evacuation needed

For the people of Papenburg, there is currently no danger, said the NDR Lower Saxony spokeswoman. An evacuation of the area is not currently being considered, for example due to the formation of smoke. It is also excluded that the fire spreads: there are no other boats en route through the canal or moored in the immediate vicinity of the “Friederike von Papenburg”.

Tourist information branch

The “Friederike von Papenburg” is a replica. It is part of an open-air maritime museum. The brig serves as a branch of the tourist information office and is a popular photo opportunity. The museum’s fleet also includes a Tjalk (special shallow water boat), a Spitzmutte (peat barge), a Kuff (flat bottom boat), a schooner (fast cargo boat) and a Schmack (hook sailboat).
