The incumbent Frank Mentrup (SPD) remains the mayor of Karlsruhe. He won this year’s OB election on the first ballot with 52.6 percent of the vote and won against five candidates.

Big relief for the incumbent: Frank Mentrup is the old and new mayor of Karlsruhe. In the first ballot, he won 52.6 percent of the vote and can now continue to govern for the next eight years.

“It is another thing to be chosen a second time.”

Frank Mentrup (SPD), Mayor of Karlsruhe

Will you get an absolute majority in the first vote?

In reality, it was not clear if Mentrup would do it in the first vote. Although the first intermediate results came in, he was able to extend his lead, but the sticking point was 50 percent. To be elected on the first ballot, Mentrup needed an absolute majority, which he achieved in the end with 52.6 percent.

The other five candidates ran fairly, congratulating the winner of the election from the start, even if some had hoped for a second ballot or at least more votes for them.

“5.7 percent would have been my estimated result, but I’m a bit disappointed. […] But now that it has happened, that’s fine too. “

Paul Schmidt, AfD candidate

The electoral campaign was marked by the crown pandemic. There were no major events, a lot happened on social media. However, overall, it was an extremely fair election campaign, as all the candidates agreed.

Positive surprises in the field of candidates

In addition to Mentrup, who ran as a joint candidate for the SPD and the Greens, Sven Weigt (CDU / FDP), Petra Lorenz (Free Voters / For Karlsruhe), Marc Nehlig (independent), Paul Schmidt (AfD) and Vanessa Schulz ( Die PARTEI) for the office of Lord Mayor.

Especially Nehlig, 26, who had not yet appeared politically and had no party behind him, positively surprised. It landed in fourth place behind Mentrup, Weigt and Lorenz. But the other candidates also took the candidacy seriously and had many ideas for Karlsruhe.

“I take [aus dem Wahlkampf] a lot for my work as a councilor and […] It was a great experience “.

Petra Lorenz, OB Free Voters candidate

Participation greater than expected

The turnout was 41.4 percent. What seems little at first is a lot for a mayoral election in which the incumbent is also running again, says election official Edith Wiegelmann-Uhlig. In the last elections, the turnout was 42.4 percent.

Karlsruhe with a green-red future

Karlsruhe will now be shaped by a green-red policy for the next few years, even more than in the previous period. The Greens have been the strongest force in the local council since the last local elections and thanks to their support they were able to include many green issues on the Mentrup electoral program.

First, the old and the new Mayor Mentrup will celebrate a bit, he said. Crown compatible, of course, with a zoom party.
