Apparently, as punishment for his unemployment, a pensioner in France locked his son in the attic for months. According to the police, the Alsace man is suspected of holding his 39-year-old son for at least four months and not providing him with enough food.

Police discovered the case because the pensioner’s wife alerted officers after her son beat his father. The 39-year-old man was taken to a Mulhouse hospital to assess his detention. Doctors were dismayed by the extremely emaciated man’s condition, police said.

During questioning, the son finally described that he had moved into his parents’ house in Malmerspach about a year ago after losing his job. His father accused him of inaction while looking for a new job and put him in the attic as punishment. He also forbade him to go down to eat. The 39-year-old could only sneak out at night and eat the leftovers. Finally, in desperation, he attacked his father.
