After the first round, it looked like Granerud would win. The Norwegian led the field at halftime from Kubacki and Kamil Stoch. But in tougher conditions, Granerud had little to oppose Kubacki’s best distance of the day, as the Pole clinched victory with a 7.2-point margin.
Violinist catching up
In the first round, Karl Geiger still had to fight and only finished 14th at the break with 131 meters. But in the final, the winner of the first jump with 138 meters chased down to fifth place and thus maintained his chances of overall victory. “The first jump was a bit late, but the bottom line is that I’m happy with the competition. I didn’t think it would go that far, ”Geiger said later.
Markus Eisenbichler, on the other hand, fell from fourth to seventh in the final. “It was very strange in the air, it didn’t carry me like it did in the first jump,” said Eisenbichler, who was nevertheless able to strike a satisfied balance: “I jumped worse here.”
Five DSV ski jumpers in the final
Five of the nine DSV ski jumpers have reached the final on the first day of the year. In addition to Eisenbichler and Geiger, Martin Hamann (11th), Pius Paschke (16th) and Richard Freitag (27th) also scored more points in the World Cup.
“In fact, I am very satisfied, as a team we were much better again. Today we did not get a first place, but we continue to lead with our superior people ”, analyzed Stefan Horngacher. The national coach has not yet decided which six athletes he will bring to the Austrian stations of the Four Hills Tournament.
Ash strong again
Behind Geiger, Philipp Aschenwald ranked sixth as the best Austrian with 130 and 136.5 meters. “It is working slowly again. Now I have had two great competitions and I am looking forward to Austria, ”said the 25-year-old, who is sixth overall and the most promising Austrian on the tour. His teammate Stefan Kraft, who fell from 13th to 28th in the second round, had much more hope.
Additionally, Japanese revival Ryoyu Kobayashi (8th) and Norwegian Johann Andre Forfang (9th) landed in the top ten. Andrzej Stekala completed (10th) completed an excellent team result for the Poles with four athletes in the top ten.
Four-way battle for overall victory?
After two of the four competitions, a four-way battle appears for the overall victory on the tour. There are only 8.6 points between the leader Granerud and the fourth placed Kubacki after the New Year’s competition, the equivalent of less than five meters. Markus Eisenbichler is fifth, but is already 23.5 points behind Granerud.
