Formula 1: Sergio Pérez leaves Racing Point, clear path for Sebastian Vettel?

Formula 1 driver Sergio “Checo” Pérez has announced his separation from the Racing Point team. At the end of the season, he will leave the team after seven years, the Mexican said.

The Mexican gives room to a possible commitment of Sebastian Vettel with the British team. The 33-year-old’s contract with Ferrari will not be renewed. For weeks there has been speculation that former German world champion Racing Point will join.

Vettel is currently the only German driver in the field. If there were several German drivers in recent years like Nico Hülkenberg, Nick Heidfeld or Nico Rosberg, from the 2021 season, for the first time since the early 90s, no German driver could compete in Formula 1.

Difficult search for a new cabin

It will also be difficult for Pérez to find a new employer in Formula 1. He does not have a plan B and his future in Formula 1 depends on finding a new motivating project, he wrote. “Everything in life has a beginning and an end,” read the 30-year-old’s message posted on Twitter. “It hurts a bit because I trust the team a lot in very difficult moments.”

Pérez had a contract until the end of next year with the team, which this season still competes as Racing Point. Starting in 2021, the racing team will be called Aston Martin. The team’s second driver is Lance Stroll, the 21-year-old is the son of team owner Lawrence Stroll.
