Spanish Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz is said to be Sebastian Vettel’s successor at Ferrari, according to media reports. The McLaren driver is said to have signed a contract with Scuderia since 2021, reports the television station and Formula 1 rights holder RTL and portal “motorsport-total.com”.
Ferrari plans to announce the 25-year-old’s pledge later this week. Upon request, Ferrari and McLaren informed the German press agency on Wednesday that there was no comment on the speculation.
Ferrari announced the separation of Vettel at the end of the year on Tuesday. The subsequent professional planning of the four-time world champion is unknown. In the future, Sainz would drive alongside Charles Leclerc, 22, of Monaco.
“Smooth operator” in the Ferrari?
Sainz is one of the shooting stars of last season. Dakar Rally winner Carlos Sainz’s son of the same name finished sixth in the drivers’ standings with the McLaren racing team, his best place being third in the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Along with his 20-year-old teammate Lando Norris, Sainz made sure McLaren finished fourth on the team. The team landed directly behind the top three racing teams, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.
Sainz is particularly popular with younger fans. Along with Norris, he regularly ensures entertaining videos on social media. Sainz is known, among other things, for singing Sade’s classic musical “Smooth Operator” in the cockpit of his race car. With Leclerc, Sainz would form one of the youngest Formula 1 duos at Ferrari.
