Lech Walesa (77), Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Polish president, claims to be broke. “None of me will receive gifts this year because I am bankrupt,” Walesa told Polish television station Polsatnews. In the past, he had traveled a lot and made money lecturing, but that was over now, Walesa said with a view to the corona pandemic. “There were times when I had money, then I spent it. Now my pockets are empty.”

The trained electrician was president of the Solidarnosc union from 1980 to 1990 and, as a labor leader, played a key role in overcoming the communist regime in Poland. From 1990 to 1995 he was president of his country.
