As announced by the Baden-Württemberg Health Ministry, the virus variant was found on Thursday in a woman who was admitted on Sunday (December 20). “This is the first known case in Germany,” he says.

The B.1.1.7 mutation was first discovered in Great Britain.

“The person in question is visiting relatives in the Freudenstadt district in Baden-Württemberg and flew from Great Britain (London Heathrow) to Germany via Frankfurt am Main airport on Sunday 20 December 2020,” he continues.

A rapid test of all passengers has already been carried out at the airport of the entrance, which was positive for the woman. “The person was picked up at the airport by relatives and has been in domestic isolation since then,” the ministry said in the afternoon.

To confirm the diagnosis, a PCR test was performed on Monday. This was also positive.

“The person developed mild symptoms of the disease on the same day. A total of three close contacts were identified and they are also in quarantine.”

The positive swab sample was sent to the National Coronavirus Council Laboratory at the Berlin Charité for virus sequencing. “Today the virus variant B.1.1.7 was detected from there. Close contact persons have not yet become ill, a smear of contact persons has been started,” it reads.

The health department of the Freudenstadt district office is in close coordination with the state health office and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Health.
