For the first time in American history, a woman has been elected vice president. This is not the only thing that makes Kamala Harris the nation’s beacon of hope.
As the first woman, the first black, and the first American with Indian roots to become vice president of the United States, many Democrats saw Kamala Harris as the true hope of the election. During the campaign, one of his jobs was mobilizing non-white voters for Joe Biden. Once in office, she is expected to defend her concerns for the next four years.
Harris has Jamaican and Indian roots
Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California, where he grew up in an African-American community. His father emigrated to the United States from Jamaica to study economics. His mother, a cancer researcher and civil rights activist, was from India.
Over the course of her career, Harris was her first several times: After studying in Washington and California, she became San Francisco’s first black district attorney. Starting in 2010, she became the first woman to hold the position of Attorney General in her home state. She entered the United States Senate in 2017 as the first black woman to represent California, and was the second African-American woman to sit in the House of Representatives.
“Americans want a fighter”
On the day to commemorate civil rights activist Martin Luther King 2019, Harris announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. “The Americans want a fighter, they want someone to fight like crazy for them,” he said at the time. Her opponents criticized her for not being ideologically localized and tried to use her career in the judiciary against her: they saw some of her decisions as inconsistent with her promise to reform a “broken” criminal justice system.
That summer, Biden made Harris his running mate. Entire articles dealt with the fact that Harris mainly wore sneakers during election campaigns, as did her husband Douglas Emhoff often. Some saw it as an expression of their drive for action. Biden describes Harris as a “fearless fighter”. By electing her, he paved the way for a black president in the United States in the not too distant future. President-elect Biden is 77 years old; Harris, 56, could inherit it, at least as the next Democratic presidential nominee.
