First round Werder Bremen defeated Jena thanks to Sargent and Chong

Werder Bremen reached the second round of the DFB Cup with some difficulty.

The Verd-Whites came two months after nearly being relegated from the Bundesliga in the first official match in the regional division FC Carl Zeiss Jena to a 2-0 (0-0) victory. Joshua Sargent (49th) and newcomer Tahith Chong (88th) scored for Bremen.

Werder coach Florian Kohfeldt started off boldly in front of 1,600 spectators in Jena Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld and offered two tips in Davie Selke and Sargent. Milot Rashica was injured (knee contusion).

The Bundesliga club were initially optically superior and had their first big chance when Theodor Gebre Selassie (18th) hit the post. Yuya Osako narrowly missed with a long-range shot (25th). (SERVICE: DFB Cup Results)

Jena annoys Werder in the first half

As in the previous season, Werder made a lot of simple mistakes on defense, lacking the necessary speed in the change-over game, so the hosts kept getting closer to Bremen’s goal. Maximilian Oesterhelweg (21) tested Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka with a positioned shot.

In Bremen’s defensive midfield, newcomer Patrick Erras should pull the strings. But the 1.96m behemoth, who switched from 1. FC Nürnberg to Weser in the summer, was down a lot when Jena attacked, so he could only give a small boost to game preparation. (SERVICE: Ulm will once again be a cup scare)

Sargent unties the knot – Chong follows suit

Werder also had a hard time with possession. When the opponent fell, Bremen rarely had a bright idea. Shortly before the break, Selke forced Jena goalkeeper Lukas Sedlak to do a great feat with a shot in the near corner. In return, Jena fans loudly demanded a penalty after Gebre Selassie fouled Dominik Bock, to no avail. (SERVICE: Gladbach shoots the loser out of the stadium)

In the second round, the Bremen match also got more enjoyable with the inclusion of Davy Klaassen. After a precise cross from Ludwig Augustinsson from the left, Sargent was with his head in place. Shortly after, Leonardo Bittencourt appeared free in front of Jena goalkeeper Sedlak, but the ball went through the post.

The ball now passed a little looser through the ranks of Bremen, but the hosts also lost steam. However, Ömer Toprak and Niklas Moisander continued to make mistakes in Werder’s defense, so it remained exciting. Only Chong, who was substituted at halftime, increased in the final stages.
